A survey conducted amongst visitors at this week’s IBC show at the RAI Centre in Amsterdam by Trilogy Communications found that 54% of visitors consider Europe as the hothouse of global innovation in the broadcast manufacturing sector, followed by Asia Pacific and with the Americas trailing in last place.

The survey also revealed a degree of optimism in the market with 67% of visitors predicting that the market for broadcast equipment will grow over the next three years. Respondents were ambivalent about the key trends impacting the market. The convergence of broadcast, mobile and the internet was seen by 66% as the most important new growth opportunity whilst 50% see it equally as the greatest threat to the broadcast industry.

The survey followed on from a similar survey carried out earlier this year amongst Trilogy’s worldwide distributors of broadcasting equipment. The results largely echoed the sentiments from the earlier survey which returned similar findings with regards to both convergence and the geographical regions at the forefront of innovation. Europe once again emerged as the hottest market for innovative broadcast manufacturing technology with 57% of distributors considering it the leader.

Barry Spencer, general manager at Trilogy Communications commented: “It’s particularly interesting to see the mixed feelings about convergence amongst our visitors. We’ve certainly seen a huge interest in our own new Intercom Anywhere products that we launched at the show that marry together the traditional broadcast infrastructure with the emerging new IP and mobile world. It’s also encouraging to hear that Europe continues to lead the world in innovation and I’m currently involved in a campaign working with the IABM (International Association of Broadcast Manufacturers) to ensure that the industry works proactively to ensure that it is attracting the next generation of broadcast entrepreneurs and innovators into our sector to continue this rich heritage for innovation.”
